Varsity Girls Basketball · GBB Senior Spotlight: #14 Dez O’Conner

Over the last few weeks the Girls Basketball Program has been shining the spotlight on our five seniors as they wrap up their careers!

Senior Spotlight:  #14 Dez O’Conner

What are some of your academic and athletic accomplishments?

“Some athletic accomplishments are being named team captain, and despite being the shortest one on the team, I am second in rebounding and also second in assists. Academically, it’s my senior year and I am still managing to get honor roll and merit roll for this past semester. ”

What are your plans after high school?

“After high school I am attending Cuyahoga Community College to start my education in law enforcement with joining the criminal justice program to become a police officer in hopes of reaching my end goal as a homicide detective.”

What is your favorite memory from basketball?

“I’ve been playing basketball since the third grade, so there are many memories I have created over the years. There are tons of memories I could choose from but my favorite memory by far is playing in a summer league tournament at Baldwin Wallace university. Baldwin Wallace was my dream school and being  able to play in their gym and share it with my teammates was a great feeling. ”

Who do you admire most and why?

“I have many great people in my life, but the person I admire the most is definitely my dad. He is so hardworking, caring, and the most unselfish person I have ever met. He works 7 days a week to give my siblings and I a great life and make sure we have everything we need and want. Which was something he never had growing up. He always will do what is best for my family and will put any of us before himself at any time.”

What are your hobbies and interests outside of basketball?

“My biggest interest aside from basketball is MMA. I feel like it is such an amazing and challenging sport. I respect the sport so much and I hope to take classes on it one day. My idol is Conor Mcgregor and his profession is MMA as he works for the UFC. His determination for the sport made me find so much interest in it and made me understand why he loves it so much. ”

If you could have one super power what would it be?

“If I could have one superpower, it would be fly. I would love to travel the world when I am older and being able to fly would make it very easier and cheaper. I would also love to fly because the view of the earth from the sky is so beautiful to me and can be breathtaking sometimes.”

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?

“If I could travel anywhere, I would definitely travel to Ireland. I am Puerto Rican and Irish while  I have already been to Puerto Rico, I would love to explore my other culture. Seeing pictures of Ireland, the land, mountains, and the city of Dublin bring so much interest to me. I hope to travel there someday and learn much more about it.”

If you could give a piece of advice to the younger kids in our program, what would it be?

“High school goes by so much faster than you think. I remember being in 5th grade and wishing that I was a senior and almost done with school. Now that the time is here and I graduate in just 5 months, I wish it would all slow down. You create so many friendships and memories throughout high school that you could never make anywhere else. High school brings you so many opportunities that you should take advantage of so never take anything for granted and always make the most out of everything!”
