Boys Varsity Soccer · Redmen Boys Soccer Team Battles But Falls to Elyria Catholic

Parma Senior High Boys Soccer had an unfortunate loss to Elyria Catholic High School’s Panthers on Monday night in a late-season conference match-up despite a strong showing and aggressive formation. Hoping to capitalize on the speed and skill of their offense, the Redmen started the game with three forwards, seniors Jordan Corrado and Isaiah Malave and junior Josh Niemojewski.
This high-pressure formation led to some early opportunities for the Redmen. However, the Panthers were able to score first off of a corner kick in the twelfth minute. Two minutes later, Elyria Catholic increased their lead to two.
The Redmen countered with two breakaways by senior Jordan Corrado and junior Josh Niemojewski, respectively. Despite being awarded free kicks on each, the Redmen could not find the back of the net.
In the thirty-sixth minute, Niemojewski again attempted a breakaway on a pass from junior Ryan Myers, this time finding the side net on a shot from the top of the 18 yard box, putting the Redmen on the board.
Before halftime, an aggressive tackle in Parma’s box earned the Panthers a penalty kick. When the Elyria Catholic’s player fired his shot, senior goalkeeper John Williamson dove left and wrapped up the ball, denying the goal and keeping Elyria Catholic’s lead to one as the half ended.
Parma took the field in the second half with the same aggressive stance. However, some defensive missteps by the Redmen led to two quick goals by the Panthers in the fifty-first and fifty-fourth minutes. Elyria Catholic was able to score two additional goals in the second half, and the Redmen, despite best efforts, could not close the deficit in a timely manner. Jordan Corrado was able to advance the ball from near-midfield with three minutes remaining in the game off a deflection from freshman Parker Wemmer. From the corner of the penalty box, Corrado fired a strong shot to the far side netting, giving the Redmen on more goal before time expired.
While Parma Senior High suffered a loss, the game proved to be good preparation for approaching playoffs. The two goals further padded Parma’s forwards’ statistics, giving Corrado seven goals and Niemojewski four goals this season thus far.
The Redmen play their last regular-season game on Wednesday, October 14th, versus Holy Name High School.
